Designing Shakespeare: An Audio-visual Database, 1960-2000

An Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) research project, Designing Shakespeare has documented the performance history of plays by William Shakespeare in Stratford and London in the UK.
The documentation contains 1097 production listings with full production details, photographs, audio and video interviews with theatre designers, and ten Virtual Reality models of the theatre spaces used for staging Shakespeare in Stratford and London.
The VRML models were developed with Open Stages software from theatre plans by Chris Dyer, theatre designer and Research Fellow at the Royal Holloway University of London. Models of the following theatres were created:
Aldwich Theatre, London
Barbican Theatre, London
Cottesloe, National Theatre, London
Lyttleton, National Theatre, London
Olivier, National Theatre, London
Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
Shakespeare's Globe, London
Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
The Other Place, Stratford-upon-Avon (pre 1990)
The Other Place, Stratford-upon-Avon (post 1991)
Designing Shakespeare is a digital resource used in teaching.
Project dates: 2001-2003
Resource status: Ten Virtual Reality theatre models may be viewed online as part of the Designing Shakespeare Collection
hosted by AHDS Performing Arts, Arts and Humanities Data Service.
