3DVisA Index of 3D Projects: Dance

Ghostcatching

Ghostcatching is a virtual dance installation created by the American dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones with Paul Kaiser and Shelley Eshkar of the Riverbed Studio, specialising in new media. The dance was commissioned by the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York.

Twenty two light-sensitive sensors were attached to Bill T. Jones’s body. His movements were captured by the sensors and recorded by eight optical cameras. Raw data were filtered and read onto a kinematical model (a 'Biped' figure) and eventually edited in Character Studio within 3D Studio Max software.

Project dates: Ghostcatching was performed at the Cooper Union's Houghton Gallery from 6 January-13 February 1999.

Resource status: Visual material from the show is available on the Cooper Union's website.

Contributors: Choreography by Bill T. Jones with Paul Kaiser and Shelley Eshkar; design/concepts by Petter Ringbom; concepts by Frankie Rodriguez.
